German investment in South Africa is likely to continue as German companies target new markets and long-term opportunities, leveraging the country as an entry point into the African market, says specialised equipment distributor Huebner Speed Monitoring MD Derek Colyn.

With industries, such as mining, energy and infrastructure, on the continent evolving and reforming, there is an increasing demand for reliable, efficient and technologically advanced solutions that allow for efficient operations.

German companies are well positioned to support this growth and evolution through products, technical expertise and skills development. The combination of investment, technology and knowledge transfer will play a key role in shaping the region’s industrial future, Colyn adds.

Concurrently, South Africa’s well-developed industrial landscape, supported by established infrastructure and a skilled workforce, makes the country a practical and lower-risk entry point for German companies, he says.

Through its unique combination of industrial maturity and market accessibility, South Africa enables German companies to establish a presence, build relationships and gain regional insights before expanding further into more complex or developing markets across the continent.

Additionally, a strong base of local engineering expertise allows for meaningful technical engagement, training and aftersales support, which is particularly important for specialised technologies, where correct application and maintenance are key to performance.

German companies can also benefit from the country’s relatively established supply chains, reliable financial systems and well-regulated business environment.

Trade policies between South Africa and Germany, including broader agreements with the EU, have also created a strong foundation for economic cooperation.

“We can also credit the South African government for recognising the importance of making high-quality technology accessible, which ultimately supports local industry growth and competitiveness,” Colyn adds.

He says South African industries are open to adopting new technologies that have proven performance within their specific industries, adding that German products are generally well regarded for their quality and engineering, which is beneficial when entering a market.

However, as many German products have a higher upfront cost, companies must prove the long-term value of their products in terms of reliability, reduced downtime and total cost of ownership.

Colyn acknowledges that currency volatility between the rand and major currencies, such as the euro, needs to be accounted for, particularly as the time between order placement, manufacturing, shipping and final delivery can expose suppliers and customers to exchange-rate fluctuations.

Huebner Speed Monitoring mitigates this by working closely with financial institutions to secure forward cover where needed; the company also ensures that customers are fully aware of potential currency risks upfront.

“Structuring orders carefully and maintaining transparent communication is key to managing this challenge effectively,” he says, adding that building trust in the local market requires time and ongoing ground support.

Building Local Reliability
Demonstrating its commitment to the local market and its German partners, Huebner Speed Monitoring is headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, with dedicated sales and support teams in Cape Town and Durban to support customers across Southern Africa, West Africa and parts of East Africa.

Huebner Speed Monitoring represents a range of specialised German partners and provides full technical support, on-site assistance and ongoing customer engagement to ensure that technologies are applied effectively in demanding African operating environments.

The company was originally established as a dedicated representative for encoder system solutions manufacturer Johannes Hübner Giessen in South Africa. It specialises in position, speed and control solutions that are engineered to withstand dusty, wet and high-demand applications, facilitating consistent machine uptime.

When initially introduced, Johannes Hübner Giessen’s heavy-duty encoder solutions gained traction in industries such as mining and steel production, and subsequently in the port and crane sectors, where precise control and maximum uptime are critical.

A close working relationship with the Hübner team, in Germany, led to Huebner Speed Monitoring’s appointment as braking systems manufacturer Dellner Bubenzer’s distributor in 2015, followed by partnerships with industrial cabins manufacturer Metagro and cooling technology company FrigorTec, leveraging Huebner Speed Monitoring’s understanding of the technology and local market conditions.

Dellner Bubenzer’ industrial braking systems deliver dependable performance and are engineered for long operational life, while FrigorTec offers tailored, advanced cooling solutions for environments where temperature and air quality control are essential.

FrigorTec CraneFrigor systems are widely used in crane operations at steel plants and container terminals, while the Granifrigor solutions maintain optimal storage conditions, preserving quality and extending storage life of grain such as wheat, malt and hops.

Metagro complements these solutions by focusing on ergonomic operator cabins and seating systems for cranes and heavy machinery. Its designs prioritise operator comfort, visibility and safety, helping to reduce operator fatigue and improve productivity.

“In industries where operators spend long hours in cabins, this ergonomic focus makes a meaningful difference to both performance and wellbeing,” says Colyn.

Through regular engagements – depending on project requirements – Huebner Speed Monitoring ensures close collaboration between its local team, and the engineering and technical teams in Germany and the Netherlands.

“This ongoing interaction allows us to develop fit-for-purpose solutions for our customers, rather than simply supplying products,” Colyn comments, citing a shared commitment to safety, reliability and long-term performance.
